The President’s Night: Brian RuckThe first biography of Dickens was by Forster, published shortly after Dickens’s death. In the intervening 150 years or so (a weary while), countless versions of his life have been written and published, all largely saying the same things. But at last, there is a new book, The Life and Lies of Charles Dickens, by young Oxford scholar Helena Kelly, which in some aspects paints quite a refreshingly different picture of the man and his life. We shall have a look at the traditional ‘knowledge’ and compare it with Kelly’s version of Dickens’s life. |
